About Secret Ravine Open Space

Secret Ravine Open Space is a 380-acre regional park located in Placer County, California, just east of Roseville and Citrus Heights. The preserve is characterized by gently rolling foothills, oak woodlands, and grassy meadows, shaped by the seasonal flow of Secret Ravine Creek, which runs through the area. The creek corridor supports riparian habitat that is important for local wildlife including deer, bobcats, and numerous bird species such as the Great Horned Owl and Western Bluebird. Historically, the area was part of the vast ranchlands and gold rush-era developments that shaped the Sacramento foothills. Today, it serves as a vital green space offering extensive multi-use trails popular for hiking, mountain biking, trail running, and equestrian use. The terrain features modest elevation changes with viewpoints overlooking the valley below and glimpses of the Sierra Nevada to the east. A network of well-maintained trails connects trailheads on Fiddyment Road and Ironwood Drive, providing access to varied routes for all skill levels. Visitors enjoy the wildflower blooms in spring as well as the quieter autumn months. Secret Ravine Open Space is managed to protect native habitat, sustain recreational access, and maintain public safety. Additionally, the preserve offers environmental education opportunities with seasonal guided hikes and volunteer stewardship events. The natural setting and proximity to urban areas make Secret Ravine Open Space an important refuge for both wildlife and people seeking outdoor recreation without traveling far from the Sacramento metropolitan region.
